It’s no secret that dogs are often referred to as “man’s best friend,” and for good reason. They’re loyal, loving, and make perfect companions. Last year, a golden retriever named Narwhal was born and he’s definitely one of a kind. What makes him so special? Well, an extra tail was growing from his forehead, giving him the appearance of an adorable unicorn dog.
Narwhal, a unique puppy, was discovered outside in chilly weather with another dog. When Rochelle Steffen, the founder of an animal rescue organization in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, learned about him, she readily welcomed him into her home. Rochelle loves helping animals that are considered “hard cases,” and when she saw a social media plea for aid for Narwhal, she knew she had to assist.
Rochelle fell in love with Narwhal the moment they met. She couldn’t help but smile at the sight of him, as he exuded joy and happiness that lit up the room. Even though his face tail didn’t wag like his butt tail, Rochelle was enamored by his rare birth defect – an extra tail that hung down like a lock of hair. X-rays confirmed that it was made of skin and fur, but not connected to anything inside his body. The good news is that Narwhal is healthy, aside from having worms that can be treated with medication. Rochelle has no plans to remove the extra tail unless there is a medical reason to do so since it doesn’t bother Narwhal and he has no idea he’s different. Currently living with Rochelle, Narwhal loves cuddles, kisses, and playing with other dogs, especially his best friend, Ash.
