On Okie Street NE, the Humane Rescue Alliance of DC discovered a Pit Bull mix who was suffering from severe malnutrition. The puppy, Shepherd, was only nine months old at the time and had been lying in the gutter for 12 hours. Sadly, his organs were starting to shut down due to dehydration.
The Shepherd was taken to a nearby hospital where the veterinarian didn’t give much hope for his recovery. He was constantly collapsing and had severe mange that had damaged his skin. Despite the grim outlook, after a week of intensive care, the Shepherd managed to overcome this critical period and slowly regained his strength to live once again!
Currently, Shepherd is staying at a temporary residence located in Burke, Virginia. The kindhearted lady named Kim O’Keefe is providing him with foster care and cannot fathom how anyone could have mistreated such an amazing and affectionate dog. Thanks to her tender loving care, Shepherd is showing signs of improvement daily and will soon be available for adoption to a permanent family.
In the meantime, volunteers from the Humane Rescue Alliance are helping the police to track down the person who callously left Shepherd to die in the gutter like a piece of garbage. Despite the fact that the shelter was just a short distance away, the perpetrator chose to let the poor dog deteriorate and suffer in plain sight.
